We began by deciding on the shape of the garden. It was apparent that the natural shape of the bank lent itself to being cut and held back with retaining walls, and that was when we hit upon the idea of using wine bottles to form the main part of the wall. We needed the bottles to fit closely so that slugs and snails could not find a harbour, but we did not want any cement to show on the base of the bottles themselves. We laid the bottles down layer by layer and securely cemented the necks into the bank. The bottles could not be used on the corners so we built short sections of wall using stone that was left on site from when the house was built, almost a hundred years previously.Continued (click next)
