Fountains play a key role in formal Italian gardens, so we included two in this design – an urn overflowing into a tiled circular pool, and a classic lion’s head above a rectangular trough . First, though, we built the raised beds for those all-important espaliered fruit trees. A simple box of breezeblocks was rendered with several coats to provide a smooth, rounded finish, and then painted with textured masonry paint to give the feeling of stone. We used the same approach on the central circular pool, including a low plinth in order to conceal the pump. Continued (click next)
