Cabins and Structures
Case study: A sustainable artist's cabin, Cardigan Bay
Our client wanted a sustainably built cabin, so we used nine support bearers rather than a poured concrete slab.
We used locally grown timber in order to get the lengths we needed for the solid timber frame. For extra strength and stability, we hand cut the frame joints rather than just using screws.
We used sturdy larch uprights and double-strength studwork to ensure the cabin would be sturdy in the coastal winds.
The specially made double-glazed window units needed bespoke windowsills, so we used reclaimed oak slabs to add character.
Our client wanted a neat finish on the exterior, so we used locally milled larch to make board-on-board cladding.
To keep the build on sustainable lines, we used sheep’s wool insulation in the roof, recycled cosy wool in the walls and re-purposed insulation boards in the floor.
Our cabin design featured double, arched sunburst doors which were hand-built and planed to fit.
We used the artist’s own handmade pottery tiles to make robust and attractive windowsills.
We used a soft and loose planting scheme as a setting for the finished cabin.
The cedar-panelled doors features hand painted doors, and the interior was wood-panelled throughout.

Yes! We make all our structures to-measure, both for your space and your needs.
You certainly can. We can design your cabin around a tree, or on two levels, or with extra-large windows. As we are building it ourselves, we can talk through every stage with you to make sure you get exactly what you want.
