Sustainable Planting

More time to enjoy your lovely garden

A well-designed planting scheme will look fabulous, benefit the environment and save you money. We use our knowledge of plant requirements and the West Wales climate to select the best plants to thrive in your garden. We also take into account the extreme weather events which are becoming more regular in our changing climate. Our planting and mulching techniques keep maintenance to a minimum, giving you more time to enjoy your lovely garden.

Case Study: A garden for difficult conditions, Ceredigion

Very few plants will survive in this wind-battered shale subsoil. To make a garden here we needed to create shelter, deep soil and a way to help plants cope with flood and drought.

We used timber salvaged from coastal defences to make raised beds providing deep soil and shelter. We sourced beautiful reclaimed slate slabs to absorb the sun during the day and slowly release the heat in the evening.

We planted tough, wind-tolerant shrubs on the border to shelter more tender plants inside. These shrubs also provide shade and help prevent the harsh drying effect of coastal wind.

Raised beds made from dry stone walls are naturally well drained, and so we planted these with moisture-hating alpines. The garden as a whole was covered with slate chip for fast drainage during extreme rainfall.

We used a dense planting  technique combined with thick mulch to minimise weeding and aid water management. We chose plants for berries, scent and year-round flower colour. The finished garden is alive with native bees, butterflies and birds.

Simple. You benefit becasue you save money as the plants will survive better. Your garden benefits because the plants are selected to thrive in those conditions, so they will grow and look better. The environment benefits because there is less waste, and we choose a mix of native and cultivated plants that best benefit wildlife.

Quite the opposite! As the plants are chosen to thrive in your garden, they will live longer and overall you will save money as you don’t have to keep replacing plants.

We can tell a lot from the plants already growing in your garden. They will tell us where the windy places are, where the damp places are and where the cold places are. We select plants that we know will grow well in these places, based on your soil, your colour scheme and the type of plants you like.
